It’s difficult to find a more beautiful river in our country than Trebizat, just as it is difficult to find something in nature more beautiful than a waterfall. The River Trebizat is widely known for its waterfalls and, while almost everyone knows about Kravice Waterfall, the beautiful Kocusa Waterfall remains unknown to many.
The natural beauty of western Herzegovina is something few people talk about. While stories about stereotypes about people from this region are often told, either about the socio-political setting, the economic phenomenon of the last two decades, or the Catholic shrine in Medugorje, there is little space left for the couple of real jewels of this part of our country.
Kocusa waterfall is the best example of this. The vast majority of Mostarians live only an hour’s drive away from this natural attraction but have never heard about it, much less visit it. The same, if not worse, is true of other parts of the country. Western Herzegovina is deserving of research and the River Trebizat elsewhere would be the backbone of economic development.
The Trebizat River is a river with nine names: above the waterfall Kocusa, it is called Mlade, while below it, it gets the name we know best. The waterfall is located in the village of Veljci, about 12 km away from Ljubuski, upstream of the settlement Vitina, almost at the border with Croatia. It is well marked and visitors don’t have a problem finding it.
Kususa impresses firstly with its width, which is over 50m, and then with its height of 5m. When you stand on the shore, you have the impression that the water is all around you, you hear a deafening noise, and you feel the cool air that nature carries with it. These oases are ideal places for cooling off from the hot summer of Herzegovina.
The water falls, carrying sedimentary or sedentary rocks, which nature has been creating for centuries and everything looks almost fairytale-like. When it is not a period of drought and the Trebizat is richer in water, then the landscape is even more attractive. The idyllic atmosphere of greenery, rocks and water also contributes to a feeling of being in some other time, which is reinforced by the mills on the river.
Igor Dzajic with his family, along with the waterfall, has a nice catering business called Natural Water Park Kocusa. He leased the land and started investing and changing it. Amazed by the natural environment, he wanted to offer guests an opportunity to be one with the beauty of nature and find peace here.
“Nature has done its own here and we should try to be worthy of this. Kravice Waterfall is competition, but this waterfalls is more transparent and cleaner. We also have a nice access and parking lots, since we invested heavily in infrastructure. We are planning,” Dzajic said and also doesn’t hide that he would like visitors from Croatia, especially from nearby Vrgorac, Metkovic, and Imotski, as well as the municipalities in nearby Herzegovina, to find this gem.
The waterfall Kocusa, as well as the entire natural landscape of this part of the country, on the border with Croatia, is worth at least one stop off the main road leading from the sea to the inside of the country. We’re sure you won’t regret it.
