A woman died after being set on fire by a man on a New York City subway train Sunday morning, police reported.

Around 7:30 a.m., a man believed to be between 25 and 30 years old approached the victim on the F train and deliberately set her on fire before fleeing, NYPD Detective Austin Glickman told CNN.

Officers on a routine patrol at the Stillwell Avenue subway station discovered the woman on fire inside a subway car. The fire was extinguished, and EMS pronounced the victim dead at the scene, Glickman said.

The incident is being treated as a homicide, and authorities are actively searching for the suspect, described as a man approximately 5 feet 6 inches tall. The victim has not yet been identified, police stated.
