Zenica – The First BH Candidate for the European Capital of Culture

zenica-culture-centerAlthough “the European Capital of Culture” is the longest and best known cultural program of the European Union, the cities in BiH only recently got the opportunity to apply for this prestigious title.

The opportunity for the candidacy for 2021 was missed, but the next one will be opened in less than a year: in autumn 2017 will be published a call on which BH cities will be able to apply as well.

How ready are BH cities for this call? How many of them meet the basic conditions for registration: owning cultural strategy? Can we even dare to think about culture in BH cities in the next ten years? What BH cities need to do more now, while waiting for the call? What is the experience of Novi Sad, the European Capital of Culture for 2021?

What is expecting Zenica as the first BH city which has officially announced its candidacy for the ECC?

These are only some of the issues that will be discussed at the public debate “The flaming cities: European Capital of Culture in BiH”, which will be held on the 16th of December 2016, at 6 pm, at the Art Gallery of BiH (Zelenih Beretki 8, Sarajevo).

The central part of the debate will be held on the panel that will include:

  • Lazar Jovanov, team member of EPK Novi Sad 2021
  • Ivana Volic and Goran Tomka, the authors of the cultural strategy of Novi Sad,
  • Biljana Camur-Veselinovic, the Assistant of the Minister for Science and Culture at the Ministry of Civil Affairs,
  • Zijad Softic, head of the Department of Social Services and Social Welfare of the City of Zenica,

The panel will be moderated by Hazim Begagic, director of the Bosnian National Theatre in Zenica and cultural manager.
