By the end of 2018, the municipality of Old Town Sarajevo will install “solar trees” which will use solar energy to illuminate the surrounding area, but also serve as solar chargers for cell phones.

The “First Solar Wood of the Municipality of Old Town” project points out on the importance of using renewable energy sources. It is planned to install two solar trees, one on the Liberation Square – Alija Izetbegovic and the other near the Sarajevo City Hall.

“We are entering in this project together with the FBiH Environmental Protection Fund, and we will enable citizens and many tourists to use Solar Tree for charging their cell phones, tablets and portable computers, and there will be a free wifi. Also, we are planing to create a free application through which we will encourage users to preserve the environment and the importance of using renewable energy sources, “the Mayor of Municipality Old Town Ibrahim Hadzibajric said.

“We will try to finish everything regarding the project all by the end of the year and immediately launch a supplier selection procedure,” Hadzibajric added.

The solar tree will be the point of gathering young people with “practical use”, as well as education on renewable energy sources. The project is funded by the FBiH Environmental Protection Fund and the Municipality of Old Town. The value of the project is around 30,000 BAM, for which the Fund will provide 20,000 BAM and the Municipality of Old Town 10,000 BAM.
