14 days long Extradition Custody ordered for Naser Orić

naserNaser Oric was arrested upon the warrant issued from Serbia, according to the official statement of the Swiss police, which was published yesterday. Mayor of Srebrenica, Ćamil Duraković, confirmed that Orić will stay in custody for the next 14 days.

Duraković, who is currently staying in Geneva, said that 14 days long extradition custody was ordered for Naser Orić.

The official statement of the Swiss police said that Orić is kept in detention while waiting for possible extradition to Serbia.

“Orić is wanted by the Serbian authorities for war crimes and crimes against humanity,” said the statement.

“Warrant of Arrest, issued by the Federal Office of Justice of Switzerland, is based on a request by Serbian authorities from the 3rd of February, 2014. Serbian authorities accused Orić, as well as some other members of Bosnian Muslim military forces, for attacking Serbian villages in the region of Srebrenica in order to banish Serbs in the period from 1992 to 1995, and that all of that was done with torture, excruciation and murder. The warrant mentioned attack on Zalazje village on the 12th of July 1992, in which nine civilians were killed,” as announced in the statement of the Swiss police.

Furthermore, it was said that Orić was heard today and that Serbia’s request was presented to him. The Public Prosecutor of the Canton of Geneva, which is representing the Federal Office for Justice in this case, said that he will consider his extradition. Also, the Serbian authorities will be requested to provide evidence for allegations in the arrest warrant.

“Federal Office of Justice will first consider whether extradition is possible at all. Moreover, they  will investigate whether the event described in the warrant were included in the accusation and trial of the Hague Tribunal,” said the statement.

Ćamil Duraković confirmed  that Orić was heard yesterday and that 14 days long extradition custody was ordered for him.

“During this period, Orić’s defense will have the opportunity to prove why Orić should not be extradited,” said Duraković.

Even though all the details are not known yet, Duraković said that most likely Serbia found some way to restore the warrant issued on the 3rd of February, 2014, which was denied by the BH authorities.

“There was made some catch as usual,  since they do this kind of things every year before the 11th of July,”  said Duraković.
