Two new States have signed the Protocol amending the Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data, (CETS No.223), in presence of the Deputy Secretary General, Ms Gabriela Battaini-Dragoni.

Ambassador Ivan Orlic, Permanent Representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina, then Ambassador Joseph Filletti, Permanent Representative of Malta, successively signed Convention 108+.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is Party to Convention 108 since July 2006 and Malta since June 2003; today they respectively became the 35th and 36th countries to sign the modernized Convention 108.

While the core principles contained in Convention 108 have stood the test of time and its technologically-neutral, principle-based approach constitutes an undeniable strength, the Council of Europe considered necessary to modernise its landmark instrument.

The modernisation of Convention 108 pursued two main objectives: to deal with challenges resulting from the use of new information and communication technologies and to strengthen the Convention’s effective implementation.
