Firefighters in Žrnovnica near Split prevented the fire from spreading to Podstrana last night, and they succeeded, said chief fire commander Slavko Tucaković.

He added that there were 250 firefighters on the ground this morning, and that three firefighters were putting out the fire, and help had also arrived from other parts of Croatia.

“It’s hard for the firefighters, it’s night, so this morning there were replacements of fire brigades on the ground with firefighters from Šibenik-Knin, Zadar and Lika-Senj counties and from Zagreb. Now there are 250 firefighters and 80 vehicles on the ground,” said Tucaković.

He repeated that all the houses were defended and that no firefighters were injured.

The fire broke out on Monday evening after a lightning strike and flared up again yesterday, with the blowing of the mistral.
