Israeli media reported that the military targeted Iranian security chief Ali Larijani, adding that it was not immediately clear whether he was killed or wounded.
Iran has not yet commented on the report. Larijani openly attended a mass rally in Tehran on Friday along with other senior officials, dismissing the latest Israeli-American attacks on the capital as “desperate.”
“These attacks are out of fear, out of desperation. A strong person would not bomb a demonstration at all. It is clear that it has failed,” Larijani told state television as he marched in an annual Quds Day rally in support of the Palestinian cause.
He issued a veiled threat to US President Donald Trump last week, warning him to be careful “not to be eliminated” and saying the Islamic Republic was not afraid of his “empty threats.”
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said that one of the Israeli strikes on Iran killed the head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, Reuters reported.
Unnamed sources said earlier today that Larijani was one of the targets of Israeli strikes overnight.
There was no immediate confirmation of Larijani’s death from Tehran.
The United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran on February 28, killing its supreme leader Ali Khamenei and triggering a war that has spread across the Middle East. Iran responded with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel and countries across the region, AFP reported.
