The United States (U.S.) Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), Michael Murphy, revealed the story behind his photo exhibition, which celebrates the beauty of the country where he resides through his photographs.
In a video, he shared what inspired him to capture his experience in BiH in this way and invited citizens to visit the exhibition.
Ambassador Murphy recounted that when President Joe Biden nominated him as ambassador to BiH, he returned to Sarajevo with great joy, as he had previously spent three years there, from 2006 to 2009. It was in Sarajevo that he first ventured into photography, starting with a simple point-and-shoot camera.
At first, his subjects were simple – he photographed family and friends, but over time, photography became much more than a hobby.
“Since returning to Sarajevo as ambassador, I travel as much as possible across BiH, always bringing my camera along,” Murphy said.
The beauty of BiH continues to amaze him repeatedly, highlighting natural wonders like the serene, green surroundings of Miljacka Spring, the powerful Strbacki Buk waterfall, and the majestic Tisovica Valley. For him, these beauties are breathtaking and represent the true treasures of the country.
In addition to natural beauty, Ambassador Murphy also reflected on the country’s rich historical heritage. He mentioned iconic symbols such as the Old Bridge in Mostar and the castle in Banja Luka, as well as Sarajevo’s unique blend of Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, and modern architecture.
But, he added, BiH’s beauty goes far beyond these well-known landmarks. He mentioned lesser-known but equally impressive destinations like the Kuslat Mosque in Zvornik, Bjelaj Fortress in Bosanski Petrovac, and the stunningly located castle in Srebrenik.
Ambassador Murphy also highlighted the people he has met on his travels, describing them as some of the warmest and most talented people in the world.
“I’ve met citizens of BiH who identify in various ways – some as Bosniaks, some as Croats, some as Serbs, some simply as citizens. But they all share common qualities – kindness and warmth,” Murphy conveyed.
The beautiful landscapes and monuments of BiH belong to all its citizens, emphasized the ambassador.
“The beauty of Hajducka Vrata (the Hajduk gate) is universal. Bosniaks, Croats, Serbs, and many others have passed beneath it for centuries,” Murphy said.
He added that the enchanting beauty of the Hercegovacka Gracanica Monastery in Trebinje, the Franciscan monastery of the Holy Spirit, and the Old Bridge in Konjic are treasures that transcend national identities.
In conclusion, Ambassador Murphy expressed his hope that the exhibition would inspire all visitors and give them a chance to view the beauty of their country with pride.
“It has been profoundly enriching and inspiring to explore BiH over the past three years. Through photography, I had the chance to give a visual expression to this experience. I hope others will enjoy this celebration of your country, BiH,” the ambassador concluded.
Ambassador Michael Murphy’s exhibition is a tribute to the natural, cultural, and historical values of BiH and will soon be available to visitors, Klix.ba writes.
