Analysis of Number of Enterprises in BiH, Sections and Employees

Statistical Business Register (SBR) is a register kept and maintained by the Agency for Statistics of BiH in cooperation with the Federal Office of Statistics for the Entity of BiH, Republika Srpska Institute of Statistics for the Entity of BiH and Branch office of the Agency for statsitics of BiH in Brčko District.

SBR be kept and maintained based on the Regulation of EU (Regulation EC No 177/2008) establishing a common fremework for business registers for statistical purposes, in line with the Low on Statistics of BiH („Official Gazzete BiH“, No 26/04 and 42/04) and the Low on Classification of Economic Activities of BiH („Official Gazzete BiH“, No 76/06, 100/08 and 32/10).

SBR has been in use since the 2009. Statistical institutions are constantly working to improve data quality, the further harmonization of the metodology of keeping, updating and processing data of the SBR, as well as including new data sources.

First release contains data about the number of enterprises (no entrepreneurs) classified by Economic Activities, Classes of employees and Classes of turnover, based on administrative data of the Business Registers, Annual Financial Reports, the Central Register of the transaction accounts of the Central Bank BiH and statistical survey results.

By observing statistically active enterprises (framework for statistical surveys) by activities of the KD BiH 2010, it is evident that the largest number of enterprises, 69.5% of them, are distributed in the following six activity sections: 27.8% in Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, 13,3% in Manufacturing, 8.8% in Professional, scientific and technical activities, 8.1% in Section  Other service activities, 6.0% in Construction and 5.6% in Transportation and storage.

A classification of enterprises by employment size classes, using criteria ”number of persons employed”, shows that micro enterprises (0-9 persons employed) create the largest share of the total number of classified enterprises, even 74.6%. Small enterprises (10-49 persons employed) create 18.3%, medium enterprises (50 – 249 persons employed) create 6.0%, while the share of large enterprises (250 and more persons employed) is only 1.0%. For 0.1% of active enterprises, data on employment are not available.

The largest number of micro enterprises, 30.0%, are classified in Section G (Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles), followed by Section C (Manufacturing) with 10.9%, Section S (Other service activities) with 10.3%, Section M (Professional, scientific and technical activities) with 10.3%, Section H (Transportation and storage) with 5,7% and Section F (Construction) with 5.4%.

Furthermore, the largest number of small enterprises, 24.5% are classified in Section G (Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles). Small enterprises are also represented by a larger number in the following sections: C (Manufacturing) 19.5%, P (Education) 9.0%, F (Construction) 8.2% and H (Transportation and storage) 6.4%.

Out of the total number of medium enterprises, the majority, 21,7% are classified in Section P (Education), then in C (Manufacturing) with 21,6%, G (Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles) with 12.9%, O (Public administration and defense; compulsory social security) with 10,8%, and Q (Section of Human health and social work activities) with 6.4%.

Out of the total number of large enterprises, 32.4% are classified in Section C (Manufacturing), 13.4% in Section O (Public administration and defence; compulsory social security), 13.1% in Section G (Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles), 10,2% in Section Q (Section of Human health and social work activities) and 5.6% in Section K (Financial and insurance activities). The remaining 25.2% of large enterprises are classified in all other activities.

The classification of enterprises by turnover shows that 90.6% of enterprises generate the turnover less than 4 million KM annually, 6.0% of enterprises generate turnover between 4 and 20 million KM, and only 1.7% of enterprises have turnover of 20 million KM and more. For 1.7% of active enterprises, data on turnover are not available.
