Anniversary of Husein-kapetan Gradaščević’s Death, do you know who he was?

Leader of the Movement for autonomy of Bosnia within the former Ottoman Empire Husein-kapetan Gradaščević passed away on this date in Istanbul at the age of 32.

Husein-kapetan, also known as the Dragon of Bosnia, is one of the most recognizable figures in Bosnia in the 19th century. He was born in Gradačac, where he was leading the captaincy.

During the turbulent times in the Ottoman Empire, when many provinces were asking for independency and greater autonomy, Husein-kapetan was one of the main advocates for the autonomy of Bosnia.

He was elected the head of the Movement for autonomy and at one point in time he was de facto the key figure in the former Bosnian pašaluk. However, a more numerous Ottoman army, with the help of domestic traitors who opposed the autonomic status of Bosnia, did not allow the Dragon of Bosnia to carry out his plan until the end.

In a crucial battle, Husein-kapetan was defeated near Sarajevo, after which he had to escape to the territory of the Habsburg Monarchy, then to Belgrade, and eventually to Istanbul, where he passed away on August 17, 1834.

Although the Movement for Bosnian autonomy failed, Gradaščević is one of the most significant individuals in the history of BiH today.
