A hospital in the Gaza Strip announced today that at least 50 people were killed after an Israeli attack on Palestinians who were rushing towards humanitarian aid trucks in the north of the territory, which is threatened by famine.
“There are at least 50 dead and more than 120 injured, including women and children, after occupation forces (Israel) opened fire on thousands of citizens rushing towards aid trucks in Gaza City,” Al Shifa hospital emergency director Amdjad Aliva said.
According to the Hamas Health Ministry, at least 70 people were killed and 280 injured in the Israeli attack.
Eyewitnesses described to AFP scenes during which thousands of people rushed towards aid trucks arriving at the “Nablus roundabout”, in the west of Gaza City.
The UN estimates that 2.2 million people, the majority of Gaza’s population, are at risk of starvation, particularly in the north where destruction, fighting and looting make food delivery almost “impossible”.
