At least four people have died, and 38 are reported missing after a ferry sank on its way to the Indonesian island of Bali, the rescue agency announced on Thursday.

Twenty-three people were rescued after the ship, carrying 65 people, sank before midnight on Wednesday in the Bali Strait, the search and rescue agency in Surabaya announced.

The ship KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya was traveling from the port of Ketapang in East Java in the Banyuwangi district, East Java, to the seaport of Gilimanuk in the Jembrana district on the island of Bali when it sank.

Authorities have launched search and rescue operations, but they are being hampered by strong winds, large waves, and powerful currents.

President Prabowo Subianto, who was on a trip to Saudi Arabia, ordered an urgent intervention, cabinet secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said on Thursday.

He said the cause of the accident was “bad weather.”
