Bakir Izetbegovic on PM Vucic’s Initiative

bakir izetbegovicThe Bosniak member of the Presidency of B&H Bakir Izetbegovic said that the initiative of the Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic to jointly commemorate the suffering of all victims of the wars caused by the disintegration of Yugoslavia is premature and understated.

Izetbegovic said that the initiative must be preceded by the completion of the process of stabilization and normalization of general relations in the region.

“The initiative of the Prime Minister Vucic can gain momentum only if it involves a true confrontation with the truth about all crimes, accepting the verdicts of international tribunals and the historical facts determined in those verdicts, and unequivocal condemnation of actions that lead to new conflicts in this region, such as the initiatives to hold a referendum on secession coming from the leadership of the entity of the Republic of Srpska”, said Izetbegovic.

Izetbegovic added that, without fulfilling these preconditions, Vucic’s initiative might lead to the relativization of the character of war and the scope of the crimes committed against Bosniaks, to obfuscating the truth about these crimes, and to an amnesty from responsibility of those who deny those crimes and the genocide.

“Such an initiative would not contribute to the process of reconciliation, but it would substantially jeopardize it and set it back”, Izetbegovic concluded.

As a reminder, the Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic will propose the introduction of a common day of remembrance of all victims of conflicts on the territory of the former Yugoslavia at a conference on Western Balkans, which is to be held on August 27th in Vienna.
