BHANSA invests 32.46 Million BAM in Five new Radars

Through an investment worth 32.46 million KM, BHANSA will put five operational radars into operation in the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina by the end of May 2027, which will improve airspace coverage and create conditions for more efficient air traffic management, especially in the areas of the airports in Mostar, Tuzla and Banja Luka, the Agency for the provision of services in air navigation of BiH points out.

As stated in the announcement of BHANSA on Monday, the investment is financed from the Agency’s own revenues, and includes the renovation of radars in Sarajevo and Jahorina and the construction of new radar systems in Mostar, Tuzla and Banja Luka.

“With this project, BHANSA continues the modernization of its own radar infrastructure and expands the existing network from two to a total of five operational radars in the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This further improves our own capacities for air traffic control and creates better technical prerequisites for safe and efficient provision of air navigation services”, said Davorin Primorac, director of BHANSA.

The radars in Sarajevo and Jahorina have already been renovated and are in operational work, and their working life has been extended for an additional 15 years. At the locations in Mostar, Tuzla and Banja Luka, work is underway, and the new systems are planned to be put into operation by the end of May 2027.

The new radar infrastructure will enable more reliable tracking of aircraft, especially at lower altitudes and in areas around airports. A greater number of own radar sources will increase the reliability of monitoring and the resilience of the system in case of interruption of individual data sources.

“With five of our own radars, we will have better coverage of the airspace and greater reliability of surveillance. At the same time, we are creating technical conditions for further improvement of the way we manage air traffic, while maintaining high standards of safety in the provision of services,” said Primorac.

The project in Mostar, Tuzla and Banja Luka will also create technical conditions for the transition from procedural to radar air traffic control, after the necessary operational and safety conditions have been met. This will enable more efficient traffic management and greater airspace capacity.

As BHANSA points out, the exchange of radar data with neighboring air navigation service providers will continue even after the end of the project, as an important part of regional coordination and air traffic safety.
