It is difficult to predict further trends in migration, but the data available to competent and relevant institutions indicate that an increase in the number of migrants in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) can be expected in the coming period, but not to a significant extent.
Although the current situation regarding the increased influx of migrants in BiH is stable, especially if we compare 2020 and 2021, trends in the entire region show that the number of migrants on the Balkan route has increased in 2023.
A total of 1,044 migrants are housed in all temporary reception centers in BiH, while 189 migrants are housed in the Una-Sana Canton (USC) and 855 in the Canton Sarajevo (CS).
”This is a far smaller number than the total accommodation capacity of all temporary reception centers in BiH. According to estimates, about 250 migrants are on the move outside the camps,” it was said to agency Fena from the Service for Affairs with Foreigners.
They remind that since the end of 2017, BiH has been facing an increased influx of migrants who enter BiH illegally. Those aremigrants from countries with a high migration risk, who continuously, in individual cases and in smaller groups, try to use the territory of BiH as a transit area on their way to the countries of the European Union (EU).
As it was found out, the issue of migration management is a complex process, and even though the migrant crisis is behind us, the trends show that the influx of migrants to BiH will not stop in the coming period either, because with Croatia’s entry into the Schengen zone, BiH has become an even more desirable transit route for migrants and the number of registered migrants is also significant this year.
