The BiH Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ana Trišić-Babić will participate in the 57th session of the Commission on the Status of Women from 4-7 March in New York.
The topic of this year’s session is an overview of the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Program of Action, and conclusion of the 23rd special session of the UN General Assembly.
Trišić-Babić will participate in a round table, and at the general segment where she held a lecture on the topics “Women in the 21st Century: Gender Equality, Development of Peace and Security”.
She said that violence against women is a universal problem that that, even though we live in the 21st century, human rights and rights of women are not high priority.
“Every country needs to have a legal and moral obligation to respect the right to life devoid of violence. There has to be an adequate legal framework with international standards, mechanisms that would prevent any form of violence’’, said Trišić-Babić.
She spoke of the good cooperation with BiH and UN bodies that deal with protection of women’s rights, and that the adoption of Resolution 1325 (2000) on the impact of women and children in armed conflict.
She stressed the importance of including women in the maintenance and promotion of peace and security, and participation in peace missions and the need to increase their role in decision-making.
At the end of the 57th session of the commission, it is planned to adopt a final document entitled “Elimination of Violence and Prevention of Violence Against Women and Girls”. Its goal is to raise public awareness, continue the fight and recognition of women’s rights, document the reality in which they live, develop global policies on gender equality, and secure gender issues.
In addition, Deputy Minister Ana Trišić-Babić will hold bilateral meetings UN General Secretary Ban Ki-Mun, the President of the General Assembly Vuk Jeremić, the Deputy Permanent Representative of the USA to the US Rosemary di Karlo, and the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin.
