BiH Minister: I will not allow us to have a “Bosnian Chernobyl” here

BiH Minister for Human Rights and Refugees Sevlid Hurtić said today that Croatia’s multi-year efforts to dispose of radioactive waste on Trgovska Gora, not far from the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina, must finally be stopped.

At the meeting in Bosanski Novi, Hurtić said that such a dangerous ecological undertaking represents a direct threat to the life and health of about 250 thousand inhabitants of this part of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“I believe that with this kind of treatment, the human rights of the people who live here are threatened due to the inability to breathe clean air, and there are numerous other consequences,” said Hurtić.

As reported by the Ministry for Human Rights and Refugees, Hurtić said that all the alarms are on, which is why stronger pressure should be exerted on the legal and professional public.

As a positive example, he cited the success of the Commercial Court in Vienna, whose verdict closed the detention unit in the Lipa camp in Bihać.

“The issue of Trgovska Gora concerns the entire country, especially Bosanski Novi and Velika Kladuša, as the places that would be most at risk. Radiation has no barrier, and if it appears here, it will quickly reach Slavonski Brod, Županja and ultimately the entire region “, Hurtić added.

He called on all the actors of this story in Croatia to get serious, and to imagine what it would be like if, for example, BiH started building a similar landfill near Plitvice Lakes or other places.

“Because of that, all the public in Croatia would surely be on their feet. Then we in Bosnia and Herzegovina would be the worst, and when we warn of dangers, then it doesn’t affect anyone in that country,” said Hurtić, Klix.ba reports.
