The Permanent Representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the United Nations, Ambassador Sven Alkalaj, signed the Joint Declaration on the establishment of diplomatic relations between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Kingdom of Tonga.

On behalf of the Kingdom of Tonga, the country’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Viliami Va’inga Tōnē, signed the Declaration in the premises of the Permanent Mission of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the United Nations in New York.

In the conversation after the signing ceremony, the interlocutors exchanged opinions on the potential for improving bilateral cooperation and current topics within the UN.

Both countries expressed support for multilateral efforts for the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda, i.e. the achievement of 17 sustainable development goals, with a special emphasis on activities in the fight against climate change. The Kingdom of Tonga is particularly active in the UN in the field of combating climate change since, like other Pacific countries, it is exposed to the dangers associated with rising sea levels.

Bosnia and Herzegovina has so far established diplomatic relations with 183 UN member states, and intensive diplomatic communication is being conducted with the remaining nine UN member states with which diplomatic relations have not yet been formally established, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of BiH announced.
