The City Administration of Sarajevo to start the Reconstruction of the Olympic Museum

The building of the Olympic Museum in Sarajevo, which was formerly known as Villa Mandic, could finally be reconstructed. After 25 years, the City Administration of the City of Sarajevo started the reconstruction project.

As the Mayor of Sarajevo Abdulah Skaka said, the City Administration secured a total of 100,000 BAM with a budget rebalance for project documentation for preparation of the main project for museum reconstruction.

The Olympic Committee of BiH is trying to reconstruct the building of the Olympic Museum in Sarajevo, which is located in the settlement of Mejtas, since 2004. The building was almost completely destroyed by shelling from the surrounding hills on April 27, 1992, during the aggression on BiH.

According to some earlier information, not more than one million BAM is needed for the total reconstruction of the building of the Olympic Museum and Academy. Luckily, all more important exhibits were preserved. They are now placed in the Olympic Hall Juan Antonio Samaranch – Zetra, where they are waiting for a return to their home.

The Olympic Museum was located in the nationalized Villa Mandic, which was built in 1903 in Petrakijina Street, whose complex of villas built during the Austro-Hungarian period was declared as a national monument of BiH.

Once a beautiful villa, became the Olympic Museum on February 8, 1984, on the day of the opening of the 14th Winter Olympic Games, and before that, it served as a headquarters to many important domestic and foreign institutions. During the 1960’s, it served as the Consulate of the United States of America in the former SFRY.
