Commander EUFOR, Major General Fronda, met with Italian Undersecretary of State for Defence Ms. Isabella Rauti in Sarajevo today to discuss the current security environment in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the continued contribution of Italian personnel serving within EUFOR Operation Althea.

During the meeting, discussions focused on the importance of maintaining stability throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina amid an evolving regional and global security environment. Major General Fronda highlighted the importance of EUFOR’s continued support to the authorities of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as the role of sustained cooperation with domestic institutions in maintaining stability. Particular emphasis was placed on EUFOR’s close partnership with the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina, including the Quick Response Exercise that will take place in August 2026 and designed to train in ensuring rapid operational readiness in response to any potential security challenges.

Undersecretary Rauti praised the professionalism and dedication of Italian troops serving within EUFOR, recognising their important role in supporting peace, stability, and security throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina. She also reaffirmed the continued support of the Italian Government towards EUFOR and its mission in supporting the authorities of Bosnia and Herzegovina in maintaining stability across the country.

“Your presence here is more than just a promise of peace, it is a testament to the national will to protect peaceful coexistence and the hope of a better future for the Bosnian people. And Italy has kept this promise for 22 years, since the beginning of EUFOR Operation Althea. General Fronda is the third Italian commander of the Mission, and the Ministry of Defense is proud of him and of all Italian personnel because it is thanks to your commitment – as part of the great work of the European Union and NATO – that Italy has achieved this goal.”

Speaking during the engagement, Major General Fronda also commended the contribution of Italian personnel deployed within Bosina and Herzegovina.

“The contribution of Italian personnel to EUFOR Operation Althea continues to play an important role in supporting stability throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina. Strong cooperation and continued support from contributing nations remain essential to the successful implementation of EUFOR’s mandate.”

The meeting reaffirmed the strong cooperation between EUFOR and Italy, as well as the shared commitment to supporting peace, stability, and security in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
