The Interreligious Council in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), the Croatian National Assembly of BiH, and the Mostar Muftiate have condemned the desecration of the property of the Jewish Community in Mostar and called on the relevant institutions to react urgently and sanction those responsible.
The Jewish Community states that the gate in front of the land where the construction of a synagogue is planned has been painted red twice in the past four months, while two weeks ago, the flagpole at the Jewish cemetery was knocked down and the Israeli flag stolen.
President of the Jewish Community of Mostar, Amir Gross Kabiri, expressed concern in a written statement over repeated acts of vandalism against the community’s property, including the stoning of a member’s home and threatening graffiti written in front of his family residence. He demanded stronger institutional protection and a concrete response.
The Mostar Police Department confirmed that they had received two reports. The first was received on July 2nd and relates to damage to the entrance gate of the Jewish cemetery, the toppling of the flagpole, and the theft of the flag. The second report was received on July 7th, when a person with the initials K. L. reported that unknown individuals were throwing small stones at their apartment window. The police say they are working to identify the perpetrators.
