state prisonConstruction of a new state penitentiary in East Ilidža Municipality, to which around 300 convicts and 50 detainees would be transferred by 2016, started today.

On that occasion, representatives of the BiH Justice Ministry and East Ilidža Municipality visited the locality in which the foundation stone for the construction of a penitentiary was set in 2006.

“The construction was awaited for so long because of complex project documentation and completing road infrastructure,” Deputy of BiH Justice Minister Srđan Radulj said.

He added that this is a very significant project for BiH because the state penitentiary will contribute to decreasing overpopulation in prisons and the number of convicted criminal roaming the streets freely.

“Constructing a state penitentiary is a multi-billion BAM investment for which funds were donated and loaned from the Council of Europe and some domestic funds were also invested.

The Justice Ministry is allocating a great amount of financial assets for prisoners in other institutions in BiH so the financial effect will be very significant,” Radulj said.

The first prisoners will be transferred in two years when the construction of this facility, which meets highest European standards, is finished.

The facility will be located in an area of 24,000 square meters and every prison cell will house one person. The size of each cell is 12 square meters. More than a 100 persons will be employed.
