A meeting of representatives of the District authorities with a delegation from NATO and the international community was held in Brčko. They discussed relations between BiH and NATO, as well as continued support for the Brčko District through reforms in the areas of security, civil protection and crisis management.

Relations between Bosnia and Herzegovina and NATO, as well as the role of the Brčko District in strengthening security capacities, were the key topics of the meeting.

“The example of coexistence and cooperation in the Brčko District should be preserved and that NATO will continue to support the Brčko District in all areas of common interest”, said the Head of the Department for Political Activities and NATO Support in BiH, Vladimir Vučinić.

They also discussed improving dialogue and compromise, but also specific forms of support for the District, especially in the areas of crisis management, civil protection, cybersecurity and the fight against terrorism.

“One of the things we have been supporting for years is actually demining. A lot has been done by the Brčko District. You are a role model in this”, said the Ambassador of Sweden to BiH, Helena Lagerlof.

Future projects were also discussed, with the message that NATO is ready for further cooperation and support.

“What is characteristic of the Brčko District is that we strive for compromise. It takes time, but when we reach a final solution, it guarantees that those solutions will be applicable,” said the Mayor of the Brčko District of BiH, Siniša Milić.

Supervisor for the Brčko District of BiH, Louis Crishock, said that Brčko is like Bosnia and Herzegovina in miniature: “Brčko is BiH in miniature, and when you have representatives of all political parties and representatives of all constituent peoples, as you have here in Brčko, then this is an opportunity to show that cooperation is possible,” he said.

The Brčko District remains an important partner of the international community in projects related to security and stability.
