councilministersThe Council of Ministers of BiH finally adopted the coordination mechanism on today’s session, with which our country has agreed on functioning of the body in the process of negotiations with the European Union.

The only item on the agenda at today’s session of the Council of Ministers of BiH was the coordination mechanism, and as confirmed by Minister Mirko Sarovic, it is officially adopted.

This decision defines the institutional and operational system and methods of achieving coordination of institutions in BiH on the implementation of activities regarding the process of integration into the European Union and a common bodies under the coordination system, their composition, responsibilities and mutual relationships.

The coordination mechanism was originally adopted in late January this year, however, after the Government of the RS objected to the proposed text, the coordination mechanism was not adopted after all.

Then the entity prime ministers together with the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of BiH attempted to agree on the disputed provisions of the coordination mechanism, but without success. However, a final agreement was reached recently when leader of SDA, Bakir Izetbegovic, and leader of SNSD, Milorad Dodik, reached an agreement on controversial details.

The final agreement on the coordination mechanism was achieved last week and it was only left to confirm it at the sessions of the entity governments and the Council of Ministers of BiH.

The Government of the RS adopted the coordination mechanism at the end of last week, but they sent it to another check to the National Assembly of RS. After today’s adoption by the Council of Ministers, the Government of FBiH  also needs to adopt the agreed text, after which the coordination mechanism will be operational towards the European Commission.

It was one of the key preconditions that the EU has set before our country, in order for the application of BiH for EU membership to be accepted.
