A large number of residents of Žepa, guests and invitees attended yesterday the laying of a cornerstone for the construction of a Memorial center in this municipality.

The Memorial center will represent a memory of more than 450 resident of this area killed during the aggression, including the heroes of defense and civilians of the former UN protected zone Žepa.

Esma Palić, wife of the killed commandant of defense of Žepa Avdo Palić, was one of the people who laid the foundation stone for the Memorial center.

“This should have been done earlier, but I am happy that it is being done at least today, so that we could leave the truth to the future generations,” Esma said.

Together with Esma, the cornerstone was laid by Hamida Imamović, wife of the commandant of the Civil Protection of Žepa Amir Imamović, and Idriz Hajrić, father of Mehmed Hajrić who was the president of the War Presidency of Žepa.

Construction of the Memorial center was initiated by the Majlis of Islamic Community Žepa.

“There are many reasons for the construction of this center, the biggest of them being the feeling of owing it to the martyrs, the fighters who gave their lives to defend Žepa, but also to the civil martyrs who lost their lives,” said Edin Effendi Šljivar, president of the Majlis of Islamic Community Žepa.

The event in Žepa was attended by Bosniak representatives of executive and legislative authority in RS and FBiH, including the Minister for Displaced Persons and Refugees of FBiH Edin Ramić and the Minister for Veterans’ Issues of FBiH Salko Bukvarević.

Works on the construction of the Memorial center should be completed by the end of June this year, when the center will be officially opened.
