The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, believe that the pictures from yesterday’s funeral of Ratko Mladić in Belgrade were shocking.
“Elements of official support and the presence of certain high-ranking Serbian officials at the funeral cause deep regret. They show the absence of facing the dark chapter of recent European history and are in contrast to the values on which Serbia’s path to the European Union rests,” they stated in the announcement.
They add that Ratko Mladić was a convicted war criminal, responsible for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, and he died while serving a life sentence for the genocide in Srebrenica and other crimes.
“Our thoughts are with all the victims of the crimes committed in the countries of the former Yugoslavia,” the statement said.
