ZAGREB, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) — The biggest-ever military exercise in Croatia’s history ended on Monday.

The exercise “Velebit 18-Joint Force” started on Saturday and lasted without a break for 72 hours. It took place at 11 locations throughout the southeastern European country, involving 5,500 soldiers and reservists of all army units.

“The exercise proved that Croatia is protected by a modern, strong and respectable army,” said Minister of Defense Damir Krsticevic, while praising the exercise as a great success and congratulating all participants.

He announced that the next military exercise will take place in 2021, on the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Croatian Armed Forces.

President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, who is the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, addressed the guests and participants on Monday through a video from the capital Zagreb. “Once again you have proved the success, readiness, and professionalism of the Croatian Army,” she said.

Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic watched the second day of the exercise on the central Adriatic island of Dugi Otok.

“Croatia has the capacity to protect its territory in the most effective way, contribute to international peace and support the civilian operations,” Plenkovic said on Sunday.
