Croatia’s nuclear Waste becomes BiH’s Problem

The problem of waste disposal of the Krsko nuclear power plant, which is jointly owned by Croatia and Slovenia, is becoming a problem for Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), since the radioactive waste disposal site is planned to be built 850 meters from the state border of our country.

Ownership of this power plant is shared between Croatia and Slovenia, and therefore all activities related to radioactive waste. These two countries committed themselves by contract that Croatia will take over its share of radioactive waste by 2023, because Krsko nuclear power plan is only obligated to do so until the end of this year.

The Fund for Financing the Decommissioning and Disposal of Radioactive Waste and Spent Nuclear Fuel of the Krsko Nuclear Power Plant ordered from EKONERG a study of the environmental impact of the landfill on Trgovska Gora, which was completed in January of this year.

The study stated that the nuclear waste disposal site is not the subject of the study and that the operation of the disposal site is not envisaged before 2060.

After the landfill is closed, active institutional control of the site is envisaged for at least 50 years. It is about two military locations in the Croatian Municipality of Dvor “Zrinska gora” and “Cerkezovac”.

How ionizing radiation affects human health

Radioactive radiation can impair the functioning of tissues or organs and can cause reddening of the skin, hair loss, burns, which is the rule at higher doses.

Position of BiH

The representative of NES in the BiH Parliament, Jasmin Emric, spoke about the issue of nuclear waste disposal on Trgovska Gora.

“They are establishing a center, which means that long-term storage is also planned there, and thus the Spatial Planning Program of the Republic of Croatia determined that Trgovska Gora is the preferred place for the disposal of radioactive and nuclear waste. This actually means that it is not just a warehouse, but a Center for disposal of radioactive waste, which includes long-term disposal, because the Strategy adopted in 2014 foresees the gradual upgrading of that center,” said Emric, Klix.ba reports.
