At the beginning of this month, the first mechanical thrombectomy was performed on a five-year-old child with a stroke at the Sarajevo University Clinical Center (KCUS).

The patient was admitted to the Pediatric Clinic in a serious medical condition and is currently recovering in the Neuropediatric Department.

According to prof. Dr. Sandra Vegar Zubovic, director of diagnostic disciplines, emergency magnetic resonance imaging of the brain pointed to blockage of the basilar artery with life-threatening brainstem infarction, which was indicated by the patient’s severe clinical condition with deprivation, loss of coordination, and difficulty swallowing.

”Due to the signs of stroke by a multidisciplinary team composed of pediatricians and neuro-interventional radiologists, an indication for mechanical thrombectomy has been established, for which KCUS, as a tertiary level institution, is staffed and technically capacious. The team of neuro-interventional radiologists of the Clinic of Radiology, in cooperation with anesthesiologists, successfully performed this procedure in a short time after the diagnosis, which led to an immediate improvement in the child’s clinical picture and withdrawal of symptoms,” said Prof. Dr. Vegar Zubovic.

The team of neuro-interventional radiologists of the Clinic of Radiology KCUS states that according to their search of available literature, only 16 reports of performing mechanical thrombectomy at this age have been published in the world so far.
