New method for the treatment of liver cancer without performing surgery has been performed in routine practice for the first time in B&H at the University Clinical Center Tuzla.
It is so called ethanol ablation of liver tumors in which a certain amount of absolute alcohol is directly, by ultrasound, injected in the tumor.
After the treatment, the cell death of the tumor and a small part of the surrounding healthy tissue occurs, which completely destroys the tumor and replace it by scar tissue.
As announced by the University Clinical Center Tuzla, the procedure itself lasts for 20 minutes, and the patient can go home the next day.
Additional benefit is that the procedure can be repeated as many times as necessary for the tumor to completely disappear.
According to Prof. Nermin Salkic, even though this is a procedure that is applicable to a very selective group of patients, the ethanol ablation enables either the cure or it significantly prolongs the life of patients, which is measured in years.
Until now, patients in B&H who had liver tumors or liver metastases that were not suitable for surgical treatment for various reasons, had to go beyond the borders of B&H for this procedure.
