13735303_1798547667048576_919274346_nDue to release of large amounts of waste material into Krizevica River, a tributary of the Drina River, which flows through Bratunac and Srebrenica, a massive fish kills on these rivers took place.

The unusual color of Krizevica River was first noticed by fishermen who immediately informed the police and the environmental inspection.

“Around 4 kilometers downstream Krizevica River into Drina, I noticed that Drina, along the coast, has changed its color. Shortly after, the fishermen contacted me and informed me that there is a large amount of dead fish at the coast. When I arrived I saw a terrible scene. Water was dark red and a large amount of fish were dying in shallow water, jumping out of the water. Really horrible. We immediately contacted the police and the environmental inspectors,” said the professional fish-guard of the Sport fishing society “Drina”, Miroslav Loncarevic.

Immediately upon the notification, the ecological inspector of the Municipality of Bratunac, Nevenka Majstorovic, came.

“We found large quantities of dead fish on the shore of Krizevica River. There was a greenish-blue mass, with silver shine, on the edge of the river. Together with people from SDC ‘Drina’, we visited all the entrances along the river Krizevica to the factory for galvanizing in the Municipality of Srebrenica, because we wanted to find out the source of these toxic substances. Unfortunately, we were unable to determine where do these substances come from. After the inspection, we have taken samples of the water and the dead fish which we are going to send to the Veterinary Institute ‘Vaso Butozan’ in Banja Luka for analysis,” said Nevenka Majstorovic.

The ecological inspector of the Municipality of Srebrenica was informed about the whole case, and he has also reviewed the terrain and taken all the necessary activities in this municipality.

“On the flow of Krizevica River, in the Municipality of Srebrenica, I was unable to find any of the dead fish. I visited all the economic entities along Krizevica River and none of these entities can execute pollution to the eco-system of the river Krizevica. Along the river there are refrigerators, a new factory for processing potatoes that had not yet started production, the company ‘Prevent’, then ’11 Mart’ which is dealing with melting of aluminum and “Factory for galvanizing’ which has worked at reduced capacity this weekend,” said Ilijaz Begic, environmental inspector of the Municipality of Srebrenica.

Polluted water and dead fish will be forwarded to the analysis and more information about the causes of pollution will be known after the results are obtained.
