EU, NATO must prepare alternative Solutions in Case the SC refuses to extend EUFOR Mandate in BiH

In yesterday’s resolution on Bosnia and Herzegovina, the European Parliament called for the extension of the mandate of the EUFOR Althea operation, stressing that the European Union and NATO must prepare alternative solutions in case the Security Council refuses to extend the mandate.

The European Parliament welcomed the recent strengthening of EUFOR Althea with the deployment of 500 new personnel from reserve forces deployed outside BiH as a precautionary measure.

“Welcomes the continued presence of the EUFOR Althea operation in the country and the extension of its mandate by the United Nations Security Council on November 3, 2021,” the resolution reads.

The resolution emphasizes the strategic importance of the Brcko district and calls for consideration of further deployment based on a realistic threat assessment.

They pointed out that it is very necessary to extend the mandate of EUFOR after November 2022.

“It therefore calls on the member states to work within the UN on the extension of the mandate and underlines the extreme importance of having alternative solutions ready in case of non-extension; it therefore calls on the EU and its international partners, including NATO, to develop appropriate alternative solutions in order to maintain the mechanism for strengthening peace in BiH if the mandate of the UN Security Council for the operation is not extended,” the resolution reads.
