Beijing on Thursday denounced EU tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles as protectionist behavior and said it hoped the European bloc would correct its “wrong practices” and resolve trade disputes through dialogue.
Industry officials say both Europe and China have reason to strike a deal in the coming months to avoid adding billions of dollars in new costs to Chinese electric car makers.
China said it would take “all necessary measures” to protect its interests after the European Commission announced on Wednesday that it would impose additional tariffs of up to 38.1 percent on imported Chinese electric cars from July.
“We call on the EU to listen carefully to objective and rational voices from all walks of life, to immediately correct its wrong practices, stop politicizing economic and trade issues, and properly resolve economic and trade frictions through dialogue and consultation,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Li Qiang at the regular press briefing, Fena writes.
