European Parliament: Two key Problems are blocking BiH’s Progress

The assembly of the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee is scheduled for tomorrow, and one topic is the report on Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), prepared before the session by rapporteur Paulo Rangel.

The Portuguese member of the European Parliament (MEP’s)report (EPP) consists of 6 chapters: the functioning of the institutions, the reconciliation process, reform, the rule of law, human rights, and also foreign and security policy.

In his report, Rangel sees two key issues, the withdrawal of Republika Srpska (RS) representatives from state institutions, and a stalemate in negotiations on electoral law reform.

”Unsuccessful achievement of indiscriminate and unconditional return to all state institutions, as well as a balanced agreement on electoral law reform, will continue to hamper BiH’s social, economic, and Euro-Atlantic progress, harm reconciliation efforts, and undoubtedly contribute to tensions in country and region, especially having in mind the Russian aggression on Ukraine and the related malicious interference in the Western Balkans,” it was noted in this report.

The report also states the importance of the smooth functioning of the EUFOR/Althea military operation and the Office of the High Representative (OHR) in BiH. He concluded that it is very important to renew EUFOR’s mandate in November, Avaz writes.
