European Union confirms Reimposition of Sanctions on Iran

The European Union confirmed today that it had reimposed sweeping sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program, after the United Nations reimposed its own comprehensive measures.

The UN took the step over the weekend after Western powers triggered the so-called “snapback mechanism” under the 2015 nuclear deal.

The sanctions reimposed by the 27-nation bloc include UN measures banning Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile activities.

But they also extend beyond that to include financial measures, including a freeze on the assets of Iran’s central bank.

Tehran has condemned the reimposition of UN sanctions as “unjustified.”

Despite the reimposition, Western leaders have stressed that channels for dialogue remain open.

Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, said on Sunday that the reimposition of sanctions “must not be the end of diplomacy.”
