55 years ago, an Olympic sized pool opened in Lukavac. The pool in Lukavac was among the first of its kind in Yugoslavia, and in 1965 citizens of Lukavac were the successful hosts of a water polo tournament of local former clubs from B&H.
For years, the pool at Lukavac was the home of swimmers of PK Galeb, which achieved valuable results. However, after privatization in 2009, the pool was renovated, opened, but then quickly closed.
In the process of privatization, the company CPM BH bought the pool, and Municipality Lukavac announced the previously announced tender.
‘I have not seen in a long time anyone from the headquarters of CMP BH come. At the front door, as you see for yourself, court summons have been placed, while one part of the premises is used by homeless people who get drunk and sleep there’’, said one of the inhabitants of the street Slatine, which is found nearby the Lukavac pool.
Lukavac citizens said that the pool worked in summer 2009. But then, there were speculations about the poor quality of water. Next summer, the pool was not working, and was then the target of destructive forces that have devastated the facilities within the complex.
‘’We do not know what municipality Lukavac is planning, but it is clear how this problem must be solved. The pool that was once the pride of all Lukavac citizens is today a mockery and a place that we do not want to go through’’, said one citizen of Lukavac who did not want his name mentioned.
We tried to contact the responsible persons from CMP BH, but in Lukavac no one could tell us what number to call or an address.
‘’No one established contact with us for a long time, nor did anyone see them’’, said citizens of Lukavac.
In Municipality Lukavac, after two days of waiting, it was said how Mayor Dževad Mujkić spoke with journalists only in his office and that he does not do telephone interviews. Yesterday there was a session of the Municipal Council, and it was told to klix that Mayor Dževad Mujkić would speak about the devastated pool next week.
The former pride of Lukavac looks ghostly. Individuals have smashed everything that could be smashed, and ‘iron pickers’ took everything all the manhole covers. Weeds and low-growing plants make their way through the decrepit concrete.
Will Lukavac citizens preserve the pool in the 21st century, which was built in 1959?
