On the territory of the municipality Bosanski Petrovac on the farm of Miodrag Latinović, this year’s flax harvesting have started, and with a very good yield.
“The harvesting is taking place on this parcel, which was seeded on 3.6 hectares, and I can say that the flax has very good quality, the yield is also very good, unlike the last year which was very rainy and with a lot of humidity, this year was extremely sunny and ideal for flax, and we are expecting to harvest around 4 tons of flax seeds this year, “said Miodrag Latinović, the farmer from Bosanski Petrovac.
More than 8 hectares of this highly requested oilseeds was seeded on the area of Bosanski Petrovac. At the moment, only 3 agricultural producers decided to culture this agricultural crops.
“Yield from flax is very good, and I place smaller part in the grain, and most of the crops is processed in my small facility for cold squeezing oil, because the sale of oil achieve much better price,” said Latinović.
Miodrag Latinović said that his oil has found its way to foreign markets as well, and it reached Dubai and Canada.
For the production of 1 liter of flaxseed oil, 3-4 kilograms of flax seeds are needed, and with sale of the oil, the price up to 40 BAM can be achieved only on the domestic market.
Although this year’s yield of flax showed very good perspective, Latinović does not intend to increase the production next year.
“The problem is that the state does not encourage the farmers, there are no incentives for the flax culturing, although it is an extremely useful and medicinal plant. The other problem is the lack of quality land parcels, you can seed flax on the same land parcel every seventh year, and I have to find new parcels for the next seeding, because it cannot be seeded on this year’s parcel,” said Latinović.
Besides flax, Latinović family planted other cereals this year as well, like rye, oats, switchgrass, buckwheat and grass-legume mixture. Latinović is farming 67 hectares, 26 hectares of the rental state land, and the rest is his own agricultural land or rented from private individuals.
