FM of Canada: Peace in the Region Depends on Peace in BiH

Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada on the occasion of the International Day of Remembrance in Memory of the Victims of the Srebrenica Genocide on July 11.

Peace in the region depends on peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“Today, as we mark the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada remembers the killing of more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys, and the displacement of more than 20,000 women, children and the elderly, who were forcibly expelled from their homes in Srebrenica by Bosnian Serb forces.

On this deeply saddening occasion, we pay tribute to the victims and recognize the enduring pain of survivors and their loved ones as they continue to work to heal.

Following a UN General Assembly resolution adopted in May 2024, today is the second International Day of Remembrance of the 1995 Srebrenica Genocide. Canada is proud to sponsor the resolution because it is important to remember and learn from such terrible periods in the history of our world.

Canada remains committed to defending the 1995 Dayton Peace Agreement and supports the sovereignty, territorial integrity and multi-ethnic character of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Peace in the region depends on peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Remembering the crimes and tragedies of the past and holding those responsible accountable is essential for building a future based on justice, reconciliation and lasting peace.”
