The French Embassy and the French Institute in Bosnia and Herzegovina with great sadness received the news of the death of General Jovan Divjak, a Bosnian patriot who defended Bosnia and Herzegovina and Sarajevo during the war in the 1990s.

“A great humanist, a man of culture and strong intellect, General Jovan Divjak dedicated all his life to solidarity, especially with the most vulnerable and forgotten ones, such as young Roma, whom he enabled to complete their higher education, which he was proud of. Thousands of young Bosnians were given the opportunity to study thanks to the association ‘Education Builds Bosnia and Herzegovina’, which he founded, and was continuously supported by the French Embassy in BiH,” the Embassy said.

France also mourns General Jovan Divjak as a great Francophone friend of France and the French people, the first Bosnian to receive the Legion of Honor medal, the highest French order of merit.

The French Institute and the French Embassy in BiH express their sincere condolences to the family and friends of Jovan Divjak, whose “death is a great loss for Bosnia and Herzegovina.”
