Stanislav-Galic180413In the first massacre on the Markale market, on February 5 in 1994, 68 people were killed and 144 wounded.

The shell was fired from the position of the Sarajevo-Romanija Corps of the Army of Republika Srpska (VRS). Stanislav Galić, the commandant of this corps at that time, was validly sentenced before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) to life imprisonment.

The Hague tribunal sentenced the former general of the VRS Dragomir Milošević to 33 years in prison for terrorizing the civil population of Sarajevo from 1994 to 1995. Since August 1994 until the end of the war in November 1995, Dragomir Milošević commanded the Romanija Corps of VRS which made a blockade around the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, in the appeal judgment it has been revealed that, allegedly, Milošević was on treatment at the time when the massacre on Markale occurred, thus his sentence was decreased to 29 years.

At the time when he was on treatment, Milošević’s replacement was the general Čedomir Sladoje, but he was never accused of the massacre on Markale.

During the trial of Milošević, the Court Council highlighted that the attack on the Markale market which occurred on August 28, 1995, when 34 civilians were killed and 78 wounded, is one of the most heinous crimes. Moreover, it also revealed that the Sarajevo-Romanija Corps bombed the Markale market. The Council rejected the allegations by the defense that the bombing of the Markale market was performed by the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, it was said.
