Unofficially, Hadzic got sick at home, and then was taken to the emergency center where he died. It is assumed that he had a clot in his lungs. Hadzic was in poor health condition, in the past month he was hospitalized twice.

Hadzic’s trial was discontinued in October 2014 when he fell ill in detention on remand.

Hadzic, a former president of the self-proclaimed Republika Srpska Krajina, was charged with crimes against humanity and violations of the laws and customs of war in Croatia from 1991 to 1995, and after many years of fleeing and hiding, was arrested in June 2011 on Fruska Gora and extradited to the ICTY -u, where his trial started in October 2012.

In July 2004 he had been charged by The Hague tribunal for war crimes, murder, deportation, imprisonment, torture and deportation of Croats and other non-Serb population. He is also accused of the massacre at Ovcara, where 250 Croatians who were taken from the Vukovar hospital in 1991 got shot.

During his initial appearance at the court, he pleaded not guilty to all counts.

His trial started on the 16th of October 2012. The Prosecutor’s Office, on the 9th of April last year, completed the presentation of evidence. The defense case started in July.

The ICTY released Hadzic on the 16th of April on provisional release for health reasons.
