Patents Registration oslobodjenje.baIn the period from 1993 to 2015, a total of 4,754 patents were registered in B&H, according to the data by the Institute for Intellectual Ownership of B&H. Only during the past year, 368 patents were registered in the Institute. Of 368 patents in 2015, 54 were registered by domestic applicants.

Retired professor Vinko Pravdić from Sarajevo invented and patented an autonomous pump station AT-2 which, when it starts to be produced massively which is what the innovator hopes for, can be of great importance for agriculture and the economic development of B&H in general. Pravdić’s patent is one of 42 patents in total registered in B&H in 2014.

The most patents in B&H, owned by foreigners, are from the field of organic chemistry and fields related to preparations for medical, dental or hygienic needs. Regarding domestic owners, the majority of patents are from the field of everyday life necessities.

The submitter has to pay costs of procedure and administration tax for the submission of the patent. Price of submission includes publishing of the patent submission and first two years of patent maintenance. If the submitter is a legal entity, costs of procedure for submission of patent amount to 250 BAM and 10 Bam for administration tax, while physical entities pay 125 BAM for procedure costs and five BAM for administration tax.

The patent lasts for 20 years since the day of submission, and consensual patent lasts 10 years since the day of submission. Submitter of patent application then becomes the holder of patent and is obliged to pay patent maintenance every year, while it lasts. Payments are made before the beginning of the year in which the patent lasts, similar as in the case of vehicle registration.

Holder of approved patent has exclusive right to prevent all other persons from commercially using his/her invention.
