12966242_1751850371718306_33956089_nCarsija is part of the city, almost always in the center of it, which mainly developed its form and name during the Ottoman rule in BiH.

Carsija represents one of the most important characteristics of Ottoman town, its commercial center, in which the most of economic activities are done. Carsija is usually characterized by specific architectural qualities that make it recognizable in the whole complex of the city and with its specificities it reflects the identity and spirit of the city. The basic elements of carsija are mostly mosques, small shops and drinking fountains.

Traditional carsija also included hamams (public baths), endowments, the city administration and other objects of greater importance for the city. Carsija that is specific for the area of BiH draws its roots from the Ottoman and Islamic tradition, although carsijas in BiH and in the Balkans generally contain specific elements that are not found in other places which were under the influence of Ottoman Empire.

Clock towers, churches and synagogues are equally authentic on BiH carsijas. Bosnian carsijas are places that breathe. They have a soul, heart, eyes and ears. Every city, every place in BiH has its own carsija. Carsija is one of the most important elements of the Ottoman city, because it represents its commercial center, it has a distinctive architectural complex that is made of the main elements of carsija, mosques, the clock tower, church, shops and drinking fountains.

Today, modern carsijas relatively changed their appearance. Today, they include objects that accompany modern life, such as restaurants, municipal buildings, cultural centers and other facilities that make the life easier. Regardless of the impact of modern times, carsijas in BiH kept their original shape of formation and remained places where you can drink coffee, talk, negotiate, conduct business and socialize.
