International Day of Solidarity

solidarnostToday, the world is marking the International Day of Human Solidarity, which was established by the United Nations in 2006 to highlight the importance of solidarity, especially regarding the alleviation of poverty. This initiative, launched by the former Polish President and Solidarity founder Lech Walesa, wishes to encourage fruitful discussion on achieving the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDG).

‘’Solidarity is the only logical option for successfully coping with today’s challenges, such as famine, epidemics, disproportionate allocation of resources and terrorism’’, said Walesa.

However, this day is also an occasion to ask ourselves how much we are united and our feelings towards one another. Do we ask ourselves, what is it like for them? Today, there are many people who need help, from the person who is in a terrible financial situation, people with special needs, the elderly and those who are vulnerable.

Perhaps the clearest example of solidarity among the citizens of Sarajevo is with parents and children from Konjević Polje, who have been demanding their rights for months in front of OHR building. Their tents are located along the Miljacka. It is cold during the night, but citizens of Sarajevo are trying to make their time spent outdoors more comfortable.

Residents of nearby buildings and people passing by showed that solidarity and humanity has not disappeared, so they brought children and parents from Konjević Polje food, coffee, as well as a TV. Several days ago, Santa Claus handed them New Year’s gifts.
