Israeli Historian Gideon Greif announced he will correct RS Report on Genocide in Srebrenica

Israeli history professor Gideon Greif stated that he would revise the controversial report of the Republika Srpska (RS) on the genocide in Srebrenica, of which he is one of the authors.

He said this for the Israeli newspaper Haaretz. Due to a controversial report, he is accused of denying the genocide in Srebrenica.

“We will publish an explanation of the report in the next few weeks,” Greif explained, adding that it will also contain answers to those who accused him of revising history.

In 2019, the RS Government invited him to be the head of the commission that will make a report on the murder of 8.000 Bosniaks from July 1995. The report, published last summer, has been criticized by many, and this is primarily due to the statement that this was not genocide and the claim that “a significant number of remains exhumed from mass graves belonged to people who were killed outside the mass armed attack.”

Greif noted in a television interview last year that the number of victims did not exceed 3.714. Now he calls this claim a mistake. The report said there were 3.900 victims.

He now agrees that 8.000 people were killed in Srebrenica.

“This is the number that has been mentioned since the beginning – 8.000. We do not distort it and we accept it. Of course, we condemn the crimes, and we will emphasize it even more strongly in our explanation,” Greif announced.

Menachem Rosensaft, executive vice president of the World Jewish Congress (WJC) and professor at Columbia Law School in New York, believes this report will not change the opinion of the historian. He assessed that Greif’s announcement that he would revise the report was “a desperate attempt to control the damage”.
