Israeli Violations against Palestinians amount to ‘genocide’, Iraq tells ICJ

Iraq said during a hearing at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that “Israeli violations against the Palestinians amount to genocide.”

“We are deeply concerned about the human suffering across Palestine, especially in Gaza, as a result of the Israeli occupation’s barbaric actions against civilians,” Iraqi representative Hader Shia al-Barak, head of the Foreign Ministry’s legal department, told the hearing before the court in The Hague.

He added:

“Israeli violations against Palestinians amount to genocide.”

The Iraqi representative called on the World Court to “take all measures to preserve the dignified and safe life of Palestinians, who enjoy all human rights.”

Public hearings began Monday in The Hague following a request by the United Nations General Assembly for an advisory opinion on the legal consequences arising from Israel’s policies and practices in the occupied Palestinian territories.

At the end of December, the Republic of South Africa initiated a lawsuit at the ICJ accusing Israel of genocide in the Gaza Strip and asked the court for urgent measures.

In January, the Hague Tribunal ordered Israel to take all measures in its power to prevent acts of genocide in the Gaza Strip, but did not order a ceasefire.

It also ordered Israel to take immediate and effective measures to enable the provision of urgently needed basic services and humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

29,410 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip since October 7.

According to the United Nations, due to the Israeli offensive, 85 percent of the population of the Gaza Strip has been internally displaced and faces an acute shortage of food, clean water, and medicine, while 60 percent of the enclave’s infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed, AA reports.
