Surrogate parenthood is “an inhumane practice that treats children like products from a supermarket,” said Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, calling on the parliament to adopt a law on prosecuting those who go abroad because of it.
Surrogacy is already illegal in Italy, punishable by prison terms and fines, but Meloni’s right-wing coalition has vowed to introduce an even stricter ban as part of its conservative agenda.
“No one can convince me that it is an act of freedom to rent out your womb, no one can convince me that it is an act of love to consider children as an over-the-counter product in the supermarket,” she said, adding:
“I still consider the practice of renting a womb inhumane, I support the proposed law that makes it a universal crime,” she added.
Italy’s parliament is debating a bill drafted by its “Brothers of Italy” party to ban Italians from having babies in countries where surrogacy is legal, such as the United States and Canada.
