nursingGermany is still facing difficulties regarding the lack of labor from several specific occupations. Although restrictive immigration policies have been no longer applied, policies with intercession of higher rate of “import” of the labor force have not been adequately promoted yet.

In Germany, for several years now, the lack of labor is especially linked to sector of caretaking and nursing. Actually, almost two-thirds of the institutions operating in this field have a need for additional labor.

Almost 600 interviewed employers involved in this sector said that they are having difficulties with hiring new staff. However, only 16 % of them decided to hire people from the outside of Germany.

Many of the interviewed employers said that the process of hiring foreign workers is taking too much time and resources.

There are still many legal obstacles as well, so that 83 % of employers have faced with very complicated procedures.

The employment of workers from outside of the European Union is even more difficult.

When it comes to foreign workers from EU member states, the jobs related to caretaking and nursing in Germany are mostly carried out by the Spaniards (61 %), Polish (19 %) and Croats (16 %). From countries from outside the EU, the most workers from this sector are coming from B&H, Ukraine, Russia, China and the Philippines.
