Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), Zeljko Komsic, on the occasion of marking the Independence Day of Ukraine, addressed the citizens present in Kyiv, on Independence Square (Maidan Nezalezhnosti) yesterday, saying that Ukrainians should not lose the things in peace which they bravely defended in the war.
Chairman Komsic and member of the BiH Presidency Denis Becirovic arrived two days ago on an official visit to Ukraine, where they met with the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and attended the meeting of the Crimean Platform countries.
“President Zelenskyy, Your Excellencies, the proud people of Ukraine, I am honored to address you here today on the occasion of the Independence Day of Ukraine. On this day, thirty-two years ago, the free people of Ukraine restored their independence. The fate of Ukraine was finally in the hands of its citizens,” said Komsic yesterday at the beginning of his address.
He added that this commemoration cannot be fully celebrated because Russia’s unjust, unprovoked, and illegal aggression against Ukraine continues.
“As we speak, brave Ukrainian soldiers are defending the front lines and bleeding to retake Ukrainian soil under temporary Russian occupation,” Komsic added.
Moreover, Komsic emphasized that together with the soldiers on the front line, millions of Ukrainians are working hard to contribute to Ukraine’s victory.
“Factory workers, computer experts, farmers, teachers, doctors – everyone continues to work to keep the heart of the country beating stronger every day. Your government, headed by President Zelenskyy, has not only worked hard and bravely to face the enormous current dangers, it has taken bold steps to secure a European future for your country. Getting the Candidate Status for the European Union (EU) is the clearest sign of where Ukraine’s future lies – among free, stable, and prosperous European nations,” he pointed out.
Komsic also emphasized that people around the world, including himself, are amazed and inspired by the indomitable Ukrainian spirit.
“Your fight to preserve your territory, your independence, and freedom was nothing short of heroic. It reminds us every day how fragile peace and freedom are; how much we have to fight every day to preserve our own democracy and independence,” he stated.
Furthermore, Komsic went on to say that supporting Ukraine in this historic struggle goes beyond the narrow interests of geopolitics.
“What is at the center of this struggle is the preservation of the most noble human values – the desire to be free, to protect oneself from evil and persecution, to have one’s own identity. These principles are unbreakable even when they are defended with their bare hands. There can be no calculation on these issues,” Komsic explained.
He added that he was encouraged by the global support that Ukraine received at the beginning of the aggression.
“But now is the time for that support to be wider and stronger. Every day Ukraine is getting stronger, and the aggressor is getting weaker, more desperate, and more dangerous. His death must be hastened,” said Komsic.
Komsic pointed out that the free people of BiH are with Ukraine.
“We know too well the horrors of war, aggression, destruction, and war crimes. Witnessing the Ukrainian struggle reminds us of our recent armed struggle, but also of today’s challenges against attempts to destroy our country, its institutions, and its unique identity. While you are fighting for your country and its future, beware of compromises that in peace can threaten what you so bravely defended in war! Make sure that peace is on your own terms because the future of your country will depend on it,” Komsic expressed.
In the end, he said that even though Independence Day cannot be fully celebrated due to aggression, one can certainly celebrate the indomitable spirit of Ukraine, knowing that in the end, Ukraine will win.
“No one can doubt that the heroic and patriotic spirit of 44 million Ukrainians will ever be broken. I congratulate you on your independence, with the wish for a just and lasting peace and prosperity.”
